My dad prepared this mystery food just before Christmas. Some of it wound up as gifts.

pickles, to make you jealous

Truly, these pickles only appear before you because I’m dead tired. Been working on a house all week and I’m a tad unused to hours of physical labor every day. It’s a good tired, I guess. There’s overdone tired and there’s muscles kind of achy but in the well-used and getting stronger way, and it’s the latter.

But I think I’m just about ready for a few days’ respite for them to rest and repair.

Truth be told, I canned these last year. They’ve got a good crunch, and the recipe’s right out of the Ball Blue Book. The raw pickles just get covered in hot brine and processed in a hot water bath.

Well, soon we’ll have a visit to probably the only Japanese restaurant in a 100-mile radius, and a neat and fast bachelor chow dessert. Happy cooking.

raspberries, to make you jealous

I’m about to whip up some currant chiffon pie for you, but I thought I’d do some jealous-making first. Looky these raspberries, just picked from the bushes in the yard.

i don’t even like raspberries

Picked ‘em for Mom & Dad. Doesn’t it make this taunting even more evil that I don’t even like raspberries? Oh, the flavor is nice, but the goddamn seeds totally ruin it for me.

The pictures came out horrible. One set was from near-dark, just after a rain, and the set I culled this one from was taken in gaudy sunset light, which totally washed out the raspberries’ deep purple-red color.

But check out the moonscape I shot that on. It’s the driveway! Muahahaha.

These puppies were ripe. They were falling off the ~~vine~~ seed.

Okay, definitely off to make the pie now. Drool over the raspberries in the meantime.
